Trend Analysis

Lightening of US Crude Slate (API Rising)

  • US total API gravity: 31.31 (2016) --> 33.56 (Aug 2025), an increase of +2.25 degrees
  • This reflects the shale revolution: tight oil from the Permian Basin is typically light sweet (API 38-42, sulfur <1%)
  • Texas inland API: consistently 39-41 degrees (light sweet shale crude)
  • MN-WI-ND-SD (Bakken region): API 26-28 degrees (heavier Canadian crude via pipelines)
  • West Coast: API 28-30 degrees (Alaska + heavy imports)

Sweetening Trend (Sulfur Declining)

  • US total sulfur: 1.43% (2016) --> 1.29% (Aug 2025)
  • Driven by growing share of Permian light sweet crude displacing heavier imports
  • Gulf Coast remained more sour (1.24-1.31%) as it processes heavier imported grades
  • Oklahoma-Kansas-Missouri consistently sweet (0.59-0.74%) due to domestic light crude

Regional Processing Difficulty Implications

  • Gulf Coast: Optimized for heavy sour crude (API 34-35, sulfur 1.24-1.31%), complex refineries with coking/hydrocracking capacity
  • West Coast: Heavy slate (API 28-30), dependent on Alaska North Slope and imported heavy grades
  • Midwest: Split between light sweet (OK-KS at API 39-40) and heavy sour Canadian crude (MN-WI at API 26-28)
  • East Coast: Shifting to lighter feed (API 33-35), sulfur declining (0.88-1.25%)

Anomalies

  1. MN-WI-ND-SD sulfur spike in May-Jun 2025: 1.92-1.96%, highest in recent months -- possibly increased Canadian heavy oil sands processing
  2. East Coast March 2025 sulfur spike to 1.25%: Unusual jump, possibly a cargo of heavier crude
  3. Texas inland API reaching 41.03 in June 2025: Reflects pure Permian basin light crude
  4. West Coast API stability at 28-30: Structurally dependent on heavy crude imports; no lightening trend
